چکیده

Diabetic neuropathic pain is generally considered to be one of the most troublesome complications affecting diabetic patients and current therapy provides inadequate pain relief. In the present study, the neuroprotective effect of Bacopa monnieri, Linn. (Brahmi, BM) targeted at adenosine receptor was studied in a model of diabetic neuropathic pain. Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin (65 mg/kg, ip) in male Sprague Dawley rats and subjected to thermal (cold and hot) and chemical (formalin) stimuli. Diabetic rats developed hyperalgesia by the end of six weeks in thermal and chemical stimuli test. Ethanolic extract of Bacopa monnieri leaf (EEBM) (500 mg/kg, ip) produced significant reversal of responses to thermal and chemical stimuli in diabetic rats. The results indicate that EEBM is an effective analgesic in a model of diabetic neuropathy, and the protection produced by EEBM is via stimulation of adenosine A1-receptors.

A bacosides containing Bacopa monnieri extract alleviates allodynia and hyperalgesia in the chronic constriction injury model of neuropathic pain in rats

BACKGROUND The current therapy of neuropathic pain is inadequate and is limited by the extent of pain relief and the occurrence of dose dependant side effects. Insufficient control of pain with conventional medications prompts the use of complementary and alternative medicine therapies by patients with neuropathic pain. This study therefore investigated a standardized methanolic extract of Baco...

The effect of fluoxetine on thermal hyperalgesia in STZ-induced diabetic mice: possible involvement of 5-HT1/2 receptors

Diabetic neuropathic pain, an important micro vascular complication in diabetes mellitus, has been recognized as one of the most difficult types of pain to treat. Lack of understanding of etiology involved, inadequate relief, development of tolerance and potential toxicity of classical anti-nociceptive agents warrants the investigation of newer agents to relieve this pain. The aim of the presen...
